The night I became a disciple of Haeakcheon, the legendary master, we held a drinking celebration, something I hadn’t done in a long time. Haeakcheon, excited about his first disciple, brought out a jug of liquor and decreed that no one would sleep until it was emptied. But surprisingly, he proved to be less of a drinker than I expected. It only took a few sips for him to start rambling about his youth and failed loves, amidst laughter and tears. His informal approach to training had taught me: drinking was not a test of endurance, but an invitation to embarrassment.
During a party, Song Jwa-baek, one of the other disciples, burst out laughing at one of the stories, but was easily punished with a punch from the master, learning never to let his guard down. The next morning, as I was sharpening my blade, Haeakcheon suddenly appeared, apparently sober and refreshed. He picked me up and started down the mountain without explaining much, mentioning only that he would bring something back to me. We descended into the heart of the Blood Cult headquarters, an imposing place with guards and warriors. There, I met high-ranking figures in the cult, such as Hae Ok-seon, who tried to stop Haeakcheon from entering the main hall, and Han Baek-ha, the feared “Blood Beast Witch,” one of the Seven Knights of Blood. The master, however, ignored all formalities and publicly announced that I was his disciple, something unprecedented and shocking. The revelation caused an uproar, as being a disciple of Haeakcheon, one of the Four Absolutes of the Blood Cult, was something unusual and put great pressure on me. As everyone processed the information, I reflected on the journey that lay ahead. Haeakcheon seemed determined to mold me into something great, but at the same time, he didn’t mind throwing me into intimidating situations, such as directly facing the cult leaders. Things were just beginning, and my life as a disciple promised to be as demanding as it was extraordinary.
