Synopsis[]
Novel[]
The story begins with the general shock of the room when it is revealed that the protagonist has become a disciple of the legendary Swordsman of Namcheon, who had disappeared 15 years earlier. The people’s reactions demonstrate the magnitude of this master’s reputation, confirming that he was not just a legend, but a figure of immense respect and admiration.
The head of the family, So Ik-heon, usually stern, also reacts with disbelief. Young-hyun, a character who has always boasted of his skill in the art of the sword, refuses to accept reality. However, the protagonist soon realizes that the connection with his master would bring even more surprises. The Taoist monk Jo Yun-cheong, one of the most respected swordsmen in Hyeongsan, recognizes the name of the Swordsman of Namcheon and remembers an event that occurred more than twenty years ago in Yunnan province, where his former master had helped him.
This revelation generates a significant change in the atmosphere. Jo Yun-cheong, who was initially skeptical, begins to view the protagonist with great respect, showing admiration for the master-disciple relationship. The protagonist uses this recognition to reaffirm his position and consolidate his reputation. The story also introduces Jo Il-hye, a respected figure in the Hyeongsan Women's Association, who expresses surprise upon discovering the protagonist's lineage.
The story delves deeper into the hierarchical structure and the ties established between different martial arts factions. The protagonist realizes that his master's connection to the past and the history of martial arts brings prestige, causing important figures to treat him with consideration. This relationship between different generations is exemplified when Jo Il-hye explains that the protagonist's master was close to the Taoist priest Hosimhang, now the leader of the Hyeongsan faction. This establishes a bond of mutual respect between the protagonist and the older masters.
Amidst this atmosphere of respect and revelations, Jo Yun-cheong takes an unexpected step and bows before the protagonist, apologizing for having underestimated him earlier. The protagonist, aware of the impact of this attitude, accepts the change in attitude diplomatically, ensuring his social advancement and recognition within the world of martial arts.
On the other hand, the tension in the protagonist's family is not forgotten. So Ik-heon, who had kicked him out of the house in the past, cannot hide his discomfort with the unexpected success of the son he rejected. The protagonist, however, does not allow this moment to go unnoticed and, with a symbolic gesture, kneels down and pays his respects to his father. In his memory, So Ik-heon rejected him without hesitation in the past, but now the situation has changed. Faced with the presence of influential figures and the recognition that the protagonist has achieved, So Ik-heon finds himself forced to feign satisfaction with his son's return.
To intensify the turnaround, Jo Il-hye intervenes, praising So Ik-heon for having such a talented son. The attempt to change the mood and soften the relationship between father and son only reinforces the irony of the situation. So Ik-heon, however, maintains his rigid expression, aware that the protagonist's return puts his authority at risk.
The tension reaches its peak when the protagonist surprises everyone by officially requesting the position of representative of the family's future generations. This declaration leaves So Ik-heon completely disconcerted, as, in addition to being unexpected, it represents a direct challenge to his authority. The request highlights the transformation of the protagonist, who returns not as a disowned son, but as a legitimate candidate for leadership.
The protagonist uses his new position to rebuild himself and earn the respect of those who previously despised him. The confrontation between past and present, combined with the power dynamics within martial arts, makes the narrative engaging and full of intense moments.
The relationship between disciple and master is a central element in the plot. The Swordsman of Namcheon, even in his absence, continues to deeply influence the destiny of his disciple. His name serves as a shield and a source of prestige, allowing the protagonist to rise through the ranks of martial arts.
Furthermore, the story explores the complex family relationships and the protagonist’s struggle to assert himself in an environment that previously rejected him. His return represents more than a simple rise in the world of martial arts; it symbolizes a reckoning with his past and a direct challenge to those who doubted his worth.
The protagonist, now a disciple of the legendary Swordsman of Namcheon, proves his worth not only through his skill with the sword, but also through the intelligence with which he navigates the intrigues and social dynamics around him.
His final request to represent his family indicates that his journey is far from over, promising new challenges and future clashes.
The story takes place in the guest house of the main residence, where the characters have lunch after an incident. Jo Seong-won eats noisily, which irritates Sima Ying. After a scolding, he tries to correct his behavior. Meanwhile, Sodamgeom and the protagonist discuss the situation involving the position of representative of the Ikyang Soga family. They suspect that a decision will be made during the evening banquet, where guests from the Hyeongsan faction will be present.
The guest house is under heavy surveillance, with highly trained guards. This indicates that there is an attempt at intimidation and control by the family leader. During lunch, a messenger from the Peony Garden arrives with an invitation. The Peony Garden belongs to Mrs. Yang, the first wife of the family leader, So Ik-heon. This unexpected invitation arouses suspicions in the protagonist, as his relationship with Mrs. Yang is strained.
Upon arriving at the Peony Garden, he feels uneasy at the sight of the place, as the flowers remind him of Mrs. Yang and past events. The servants watch him with strange expressions, indicating that rumors have already spread throughout the estate. Upon entering the hall, he encounters Mrs. Yang, a middle-aged woman with a piercing gaze and an intimidating presence. To his surprise, she kneels before him, which makes him frown. She congratulates him on being recognized as the disciple of the Swordsman Namcheon and suggests that she is willing to apologize countless times for her past actions. However, the true reason for her summons soon becomes clear: she wants him to give up his claim to her son So Yeong-hyeon's position. To convince him, she offers him money and support to build his own family, as long as he does not threaten his son's future. The protagonist reacts coldly to her proposal, refusing it. As he tries to leave, Mrs. Yang stops him and, in a last-ditch effort, promises to grant him any wish. He then makes an impossible request: that his deceased mother be officially recognized as his legitimate wife and that Mrs. Yang make daily bows of repentance for ten years. Her expression hardens, for this would mean destroying her own pride. She hesitates, asking if, if she complies with this demand, he will give up his position. The protagonist realizes that she would do anything for her son and, in response, approaches and whispers coldly in her ear, calling her a "slut". Mrs. Yang is furious at his audacity, but he silences her by mentioning a secret: twelve months ago, an elixir of his was delivered to her by her maid. At this revelation, Mrs. Yang's expression pales. He confronts her directly, suggesting that he has known the truth all along. Thus, the encounter ends in extreme tension, with the protagonist exposing the fear and hypocrisy of his adversary.
