Song Jwa-Baek is a disciple of Hae Ak-Cheon and the martial brother of Jin Woon-Hwi and his twin brother Song Woo-Hyun.
History[]
Captured along with his brother Hyun by the blood cult, a man who likes to compete against Woonhwi even though he knows that he has a broken datian, Jwa Baek was chosen by Hae Ak Cheon along with his brother after being identified as intermediate talents by the blood cult, the two began to train under Hae Ak Cheon's crude methods, Jwa Baek usually trained by running and punching all kinds of materials he could punch, rocks, cave walls, trees, air, waterfall. He was ordered by his master Hae Ak Cheon to compete against Woon-Hwi in a fight to see who is the strongest and of course Jwa Baek wanted this because for him Woonhwi was someone who bothered him in certain ways.
Biggest desire of Song Jwa-Baek was to prove his worth to others, especially those he considered strong. Despite bad blood in relations with Jin Woon-Hwi out of jealousy, Song Jwa-Baek marked him as his rival. He tried to catch and defeat Woon-Hwi even if he was futher and futher away in martial arts. Even after countless of loses he became stronger every time. Thanks to his loyalty to Woon-Hwi, he gained unusual opportunity to become a disciple of Jang Mun-ryang, one of the Four Great Evils. It was especially beneficial for him, because 'The Ghost Killing Fist Demon' was only Supreme Warriors master who specialize in fist combat.
Manhwa vs Novel[]
A significant portion of Song Jwa-Baek's storyline was cut from the manhwa. A prime example is his entire conversation with Jin Woon-Hwi from novel chapter 120. This conversation marked the first shift in their relationship, as Song Jwa-Baek's hatred and jealousy towards Jin Woon-Hwi reached its peak after he witnessed Sima Young kissing him.
You’re suddenly treated like the Blood Demon because you inherited his blood! And then with Miss Sima! Those lips! Like that! AHHHH!—Song Jwa-Baek, to Jin Woon-Hwi
It was during this encounter that Jin Woon-Hwi first conceived the idea of establishing the Guardian position, promising it to his martial sibling on the condition that his skills reached at least the Blood Star level.
Shouldn’t you at least be a Blood Star if you want to protect the second leader? If you become Guardian, when we are alone, you get to talk normally to me. Until then, don’t drop the honorifics at all times and don’t get caught by the teacher.—Jin Woon-Hwi, to Song Jwa-Baek
This was also a turning point for Song Jwa-Baek; after venting all his pent-up negative emotions, he finally began to feel a sense of camaraderie towards his rival, even offering him sincere advice on the struggle for the Blood Demon position.
If this is going to continue, then do not show weakness. If we are going through with this, go forward with a calm mind. Fuck. This isn’t my problem!”—Song Jwa-Baek, to Jin Woon-Hwi
He then felt slighted when Jin Woon-Hwi abruptly and unexpectedly appointed the unfamiliar Captain Ha Jong-il to the Left Guardian position during the Blood Cult's Opening Ceremony, even though Ha had previously contended with Song Jwa-Baek for the role. (This story arc was also completely omitted from the manhwa).
You had the courage to step forward when no one else would. Since you did something like that, you don’t deserve to just be called a captain. I want you to be my guardian and become the leader of the guards of the Blood Sect.—Jin Woon-Hwi novel 181
Therefore, following the official reinstatement of the Blood Cult and the successful Opening Ceremony, Song Jwa-Baek requested a private audience. He pleaded with Jin Woon-Hwi not to fill all the Guardian positions and to leave one specifically vacant for him for a year. He was so desperate that he even knelt down and demanded an oath to that effect. However, their conversation was interrupted by the First Elder, Dan Wei-Kang. This subplot was also entirely cut from the manhwa, with Song Jwa-Baek's character being replaced by Baek Hye-Hyang. A previously omitted dialogue of hers, originally intended for the succession battle, was inserted in its place.
I am not asking you to appoint me now. I am asking you to keep the position open for two, no, one year.—Song Jwa-Baek novel 188
